ABOUT JAMES PAUL CHEUNG
James Paul Cheung is an East Hampton, NY based brand that specializes in fine cashmere scarves. This family-run business was a passion project of James’s mother, Judy, who ran a small shop in San Diego for many years selling fine cashmere and hand-made one-of-a-kind pearl jewelry to a local clientele. Today the brand focuses on offering the finest quality cashmere in an array of solids, prints, styles, and weights at a reasonable price point. Eco-consciousness is at the forefront of the brand’s mission. James and his mom visit Mongolia regularly to meet with their cashmere producers to substantiate sourcing from environmentally and socially responsible farms as well as eco-friendly fabric milling.
From a design perspective, James has culled out a niche market in “wearable art”.
He works with several contemporary artists to print their unique creations on lightweight cashmere scarves. His current stable of artists includes:
- Steve Miller (Sagaponack, NY), who takes items from nature, science, culture, and technology and transforms them into art via x-rays and painted canvas
- Marcia Lorente-Howell (Barcelona and NYC), who illustrates city and beach scenes from across the globe in oil paintings
- Lalela (South Africa), a school for young artists
Production quantities are low, so an artist scarf from James Paul Cheung is guaranteed to be unique, uncommon, and extremely special.
In addition, he offers simple patterns and solids in an array of weights, from the lightest weave to a 4-ply cashmere. And staying true to his mom’s original concept, he offers one-of-a-kind jewelry (mostly pearl). Each pearl is individually inspected by James and his mother and thoughtfully designed with timelessness and modernity in mind.
